James Earl Ray
Martin Luther King Jr., the renowned civil rights leader, was assassinated on April 4, 1968, in Memphis, Tennessee.
The man convicted of his assassination was James Earl Ray. Ray was arrested two months after the assassination and later confessed to the crime. He was sentenced to 99 years in prison but later recanted his confession and attempted to retract his guilty plea.
