To coordinate and manage the management aspects of the industrial districts, Nepal Government established Industrial District Management Ltd. under Company Act in 2045 B.S. This company has been playing an important role as an agency for industrial promotion and serving the industry in a systematic, unified manner.
First industrial zone in Nepal was established as Balaju Industrial District at Balaju, Kathmandu in 2016 B.S. with the support of the joint efforts of Nepal government and the American government.
Initially, the management of Balaju and Hetauda Industrial District were undertaken by Nepal Industrial Development Corporation (NIDC) whereas Patan, Dharan, Nepalgunj and Pokhara Industrial Estates were under Department of Industries/ Government of Nepal. Later on as the ID/IEs grew up in number and its activities expanded, the entire management was formally handed over to the then Industrial Services Center (ISC), an undertaking of Government of Nepal in 1975.
At present, 10 industrial zones are operating in different parts of the country.
